Darcie Little Badger has the unique ability to write a story so compelling and natural that the world she creates is more convincing than our own. Perhaps Sheine Lende did once walk the land of the dead and reclaim her home after it was stolen from her, and this is the first time I'm hearing about it. Perhaps there are fairy rings that can transport you anywhere, and I simply have not been paying attention. Or perhaps not, and we're all simply very lucky to be living in a world where we get to read books written by Darcie Little Badger.

It is impossible for me to fit how much I love this book into 100 words. It had me staying up until 2am and then immediately waking up my fiancé so I could yell about it. I've written four different reviews for it but it all comes down to this: You Should Be So Lucky is a slow burn historical romance, and it is also a story about rallying --about failure, and grief, and falling down. And then it's about getting back up, dusting yourself off, and rejoining the game.

Nothing I could say about this book I think can capture the true hold it has on me. In it we meet the New Book Censor who, living in a 1984-esque world, finds himself captivated and hypnotized by banned books. Just like the New Censor, I found myself bewitched by this book.

Something Kindred is a story about grief and about family and about making a home for yourself. And at the roots, this is a story about being haunted, both in the traditional sense and by your own memories and past. Ciera Burch is a name to look out for. Also, this book did 100% make me ugly cry on a plane, so that's a warning to you.

Reading this book as a kid changed my life. Alanna kicks off an entire universe of strong, funny, brave, and complex female protagonists, along with a supporting cast that feel like old friends at this point. In her first adventure, Alanna dresses herself up as her twin brother and embarks on her journey to become a knight. Tamora Pierce writes the kind of books that you come back to over and over again. If you’ve never ventured into Tortall, enjoy your journey. If you have, maybe it’s time to return.

Full disclosure: this book made me weep like a child. This is a book about grief, and trauma, and how that changes us, especially as children. It's a shockingly plausible horror story interwoven with a fantasy story that both rescues and reflects our protagonists from their own story.

All I knew going into this book was that it was about an amnesiac vampire, and that since it was by Octavia Butler it was going to be wonderful. And truly, it surpassed all my expectations. Part mystery, part vampire story, part courtroom drama, this book is absolutely riveting. As soon as I finished it I found myself frantically googling whether Butler had ever had plans to continue Shori’s story (she died before she could publish a sequel, but there are some notes on what it could have been).
